Google is, beyond a doubt the leader in Search. The share of searches in the US has grown from 44% in July of 2006 to nearly 59% in Oct 2007 according to ComScore data. But, this is taking search share in isolation of total growth of search, as well as growth of the internet as a whole.
While Googles Share has increased 1.5 points, all search engines have grown in absolute searches by at least 5.6% up to Google's 14%+.
Peruse the numbers released by comScore this month, and it becomes evident that in terms of unique visitors internationally, Google is growing as fast as the internet itself. In France, Germany, Canada, and Japan the number of unique visitors to Google are growing at 1-2%, or even shrinking 1%. Now, when you already have 90% of the unique visitors, such as in the UK, your growth is tied to the market, and even at great risk of going counter to the market.
If we see the market growing at such a clip, is it a problem that Google grows only as fast as the market? Ask the investors. Google's quality advantage is no longer a given. As new Internet adoption grows, what is Google's advantage to people who are new to the web? As you look at the unique user growth, Google is not growing any more then the Internet market, and in some cases less. This is not doom and gloom. Just a thought that maybe Google will enter the realm of normal business a la Microsoft circa 1998. Is Google's growth going to continue to out pace the competition? I am not so sure.
